Myra Tjalili

Cette peinture représente le pays désertique de la région de Myra. Les lignes en forme de vague représentent les sables mouvants du désert ainsi que le mouvement continuel des tribus nomades qui y vivent. Le pays de Myra est proche de la communauté de Tjukurrla, situé à proximité de la frontière du territoire nord/ouest de l’Australie. Il y a des cérémonies importantes qui y sont célérées. Les sites et les trous d’eau sont proche de Tjalili, Punkilpirri et Yumara. Les lignes qui relient ces sites sont des voies ancestrales ou lignes de la chanson. Celles-ci ont été établies comme indicateur pour le passage d’un site à l’autre au cours de la cérémonie. L’artiste décrit les bases de sa peinture comme la topographie environnante de son pays constitué de dunes de sable (tali) et d’escarpements rocheux (puli).

This painting depicts the desert country of Myra’s home. The wave shaped lines represent the shifting sands of the desert as well as continual movement of the nomadic tribes that live there. Myra’s country is around the community of Tjukurrla situated near the Northen Territory/Western Australian border. Here there are important ceremonial and waterhole sites are at Tjalili, Punkilpirri and Yumara. The lines that connect these sites are ancestral pathways or song lines. These were established as an indicator for the passage from one site to the next during ceremony. The artist descrives the patterns of the painting as the surrounding topography of her country consisting of sand dunes (tali) and rock escarpments (puli).

Myra often paints in monochromatic tones, black and white or red and white. The wave like patterns create the classic shimmer effect of the continually shifting landscapes, the heat haze over the desert floor. The movement also reflects the life of a nomad, forever moving following the rain clouds for fresh water, gathering and hunting food until the ground is cleaned before leaving the country to replenish and traveling to new locations that provides sustenance for the coming weeks or months.
