Philippa Guguman Nungurrayi

Philippa Guguman Nungurrayi est une jeune artiste très talentueuse originaire de la communauté de Balgo, à environ 900km d’Alice Springs. Elle est née en 1975 et fait partie de la jeune génération pleine d’avenir dans l’art aborigène. Elle partage son temps entre Balgo et Kiwirrkurra (dans le désert central d’Australie) et vient peindre occasionnellement à Alice Springs.

Elle peint des rêves hérités de sa mère notamment celui des « 7 sœurs » qui fait référence à la constellation des ¨Pléiades ». Ses dreamtimes (ou rêves) évoquent aussi la région de Balgo ainsi que les occupations des habitants de cette région, notamment la chasse, la récolte de fruits ou graines du Bush. D’autres thèmes décrivent la topographie de la région de Balgo, notamment les lacs salés, les collines de sable ainsi que les points d’eau indispensables pour les habitants de la région.

Family History: Philippa was born and raised at the community of Balgo WA. She is closely related to many of the artists that paint for Warlayirti Artists, her uncles are Patrick Olodoodi Tjungurrayi and Brandy Olodoodi Tjungurrayi (now deceased).

Philippa spends her time living between Balgo, and Kiwirrkurra in WA or occasionally visiting Alice Springs.

Painting: Philippa paints the stories handed to her from both her Mother and Father’s families, the most common theme in her works is the ‘Seven Sisters Dreaming’ her paintings also centre on the topography of the country around Balgo and the day to day chores of hunting and gathering bush foods. Other themes that she follows are depicting the topography of the landscape, the endless sand hills, salt lakes and water soaks referred to as ‘Tjurnnu’
