Judy Napangardi Watson

Judy Napangardi Watson est née dans les années 1925 et nous a quitté en mai 2016. Elle appartenait à la communauté des Warlpiri et a vécu dans la pure tradition des nomades du désert. Cette petite femme incroyable a eu 10 enfants.

Judy aimait régulièrement chasser avec les méthodes traditionnelles de ses ancêtres. Elle vécu durant une longue période à Mina Mina et Yingipurlangu, la région de ses ancêtres.

Judy a appris la peinture avec sa sœur ainée Maggie Napangardi Watson. Elles ont peint ensemble dans la communauté de Yuendumu. Durant de nombreuses années, Judy a développé son style unique. Son incroyable énergie se ressent à travers ses peintures dynamiques et ses couleurs vives.

Les surfaces de ses peintures sont richement texturées, ce qui crée des œuvres au design de grande beauté. Elle a été à l’avant-garde de l’évolution des peintures vers un rendu plus abstrait des « dreamtime » traditionnels. Ses rêves principaux sont la vigne serpent, femme, Mina Mina et Kanakurlangu.

Sa peinture est considérée avec le plus grand respect et Judy est une véritable légende de l’Art autochtone. Posséder une de ses oeuvres est à la fois une joie et un honneur. Ses oeuvres sont exposées dans toutes les grandes galeries australiennes et les plus belles collections du monde. Elle est considérée comme étant à l’échelon supérieur des artistes en Australie et à l’étranger.

Judy was taught painting by her elder sister, Maggie Napangardi Watson. They painted together at Warlukurlangu Artists for many years and Judy developed her unique style.Her incredible energy is transmitted to her work and her dynamic use of colour, “drag and dot” lines and richly textured surfaces, create works of great design and beauty.

She has been at the forefront of the move towards a more abstract rendering of traditional dreamtime stories. Her main dreamings are Snake vine, Woman, Mina Mina and Kanakurlangu.

This tiny and amazing woman has had 10 children and still likes to hunt in the old ways. Her painting is regarded with the utmost respect and she is a true legend of Aboriginal Art, or any form of Art.

To own one of her works is both a joy and an honour. Judy’s work is represented in all major Australian galleries and collections. She is regarded as being in the top echelon of collectable artists in Australia and overseas.
